Fortis Escorts Hospital Amritsar has successfully launched Obesity Clinic with Metabolic & Bariatric (Weight loss) Surgery program. The program was launched under the leadership of Dr Arun K. Sharma, The Obesity expert & Bariatric Surgeon, who has recently joined Fortis Escorts Hospital, Amritsar after spending a significant portion of his early career at the prestigious AIIMS, New Delhi, where he did his M.Ch followed by Fellowship in Metabolic & Bariatric Surgery. The program was launched in the presence of Zonal Director Dr Vishavdeep, Facility Director Mr Yogesh Joshi and Dr Rajinder Kaur (Director Anesthesiology). Dr Sharma also introduced his team including the dedicated Dietician and Psychologist for this program.
Dr Sharma and his team recently performed a technically challenging Gastric Bypass procedure of 36-year-aged male patient using 4-5 small keyhole incisions. The patient weighs 183kg with BMI of 63.5 kg/m2 and was suffering from Severe Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) leading to Breathing difficulties, Skeletal problems like persistent knee pain, backache and difficulty in walking.
The patient has tried multiple options like dieting, exercises and some herbal and ayurvedic medicines but to no avail. Eventually he consulted Dr Arun K. Sharma, after initial optimisation, the patient was taken up for Gastric Bypass Surgery on 9th July, 2024. The Surgical team was led by Dr Arun K. Sharma and assisted by highly skillful operating staff. The patient has high risk of Anesthetic complications in view of Severe OSA and was ably handled by the expert team of Anesthesia lead by Dr Rajinder Kaur. The patient was discharged on postoperative day 2 and is doing very well now. His current weight is 166 kg. He is expected to lose around 1-2 kg of weight every week and achieve a weight close to his normal weight over next 9-12 months.
On this occasion, Dr. Sharma emphasized the surgery's benefits, including long-term weight maintenance and significant improvement in OSA and related conditions.
